I was wondering is there a setting in Monzilla Thunderbird that after I read an email and click delete, it will bring me back to the list of emails, instead of to the next one?

As far as I can tell, no.  Perhaps there is an add-on which handles this?

This add-on looks like it does what you want, but for the preview pane.  I don't know if it affects new message windows:
