Hi all,

I got a server running w2k3 Std. edt. it's file, exchange, dns, vpn, blackberry basically all in 1 server.

the exchange is down on a 2 weekly basis, not really 2 weeks; basically after 14 - 16 days; which means twice in a month.

it's a DELL PE1800. have checked the event log and got this error message

Faulting application BRSVC01A.EXE, version 1.0.0.2, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

have checked dell open managed as well; no logs about the error.

FYI: i still can access the file; can RDP into it, but the email is stop working.

any idea?

Please advise.

Cheers,

Hi,

Do you have a Brother print solution that this server is hosting? BRSVC01A.EXE seems to be part of a Brother printer driver. I would recommend that you download the latest updates for your printer drivers/software. Most printers do not require the software to be installed on the server. In most situations I only install the drivers on the server and any management software on a workstation but you might not have that option.

Hi.

wow,, a very quick reply. thanks for that.
back to topic; yes we do have a brother printer; but this error is always come up when the server (exchange) is down; so i'm not really sure whether. i'm not really sure whether it is a brother printer or other problem.

and yes; i've updated the printer with the latest driver

That error message will have nothing to do with Exchange but this might be causing an Exchange process to fail. Can you move the printer off this server as a test temporarilly and then disable all the Brother services and see how you go?

Are there any other messages in the event logs around the time that the Exchange services go offline? What do you do to bring e-mail back online?

okay; brother has been removed; and the services has been disabled.

I can't really tell you the result by today; as per above; it's down on 2 weekly basis. hope you are okay to wait for this.

that's the problem there is no other messages in the event when the exchange offline. i have no clue at all. Have run DSET utility from DELL; have forward the report to DELL; they can't find anything at all as well.

I need to restart the server to bring the email back online again.

but 1 thing for sure that this error always come up when the email down.

thanks mate.

No problem re: the wait. As I said it might not be the culprit but its the best thing to try at the moment since you don't have any other errors. You might want to also consider turning up diagnostic logging. You don't want to increase this permanently as it places a larger load on the system but for a temp situation it may well provide you with with more information and errors that you can use to troubleshoot the issues.

hi there;

not good; not even 14 days; it's down again today. the most hated part; is nothing on the event viewer. the exchange was down again around 7pm. Again; i have to reboot the server.

FYI:
a little bit correction; my server is pe2800 NOT 1800; it was typo

also;
it's running w2k3 std edition

one warning message from event:
The memory settings for this server are not optimal for Exchange.

I got this message AFTER i rebooted the server
do i need to do this?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810371/

exchange running Enterprise Edition service pack 2 and i believe enterprise edition supporting up until TB size for database file.

any idea?

Yes. Add that switch to your boot.ini as described in the article. Enterprise edition has a theoretical limit of 8000GB. How big is your database? Did you increase the diagnostic logging for Exchange? No errors makes it very difficult to pinpoint.

Another thing I would suggest would be to run the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer on your system and resolve any issues that it detects.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/exbpaqsg.mspx

Are there any errors on your DC's? I know you mentioned an all in one server but does that also include the DC role? You should check the event logs of the DC also and run dcdiag.exe and netdiag.exe to see if you have any AD related issues as Exchange relies heavily on that also.

You may also want to consider contacting MS Support and paying the fee to have them help you resolve this.

Hi there,

do you know whether i have to reboot the server after i add the switch? my database is still far away from that size; it's only 45 GB.

yeah i did increase the diag logging for exchangeDSAccess for configuration and LDAP; but it was on minimum (nothing on event); now i changed to medium. do i need to increase the diag logging for any other part of exchange?  the only thing that i can think of related with this issue is ExchangeDSAccess especially with LDAP and configuration.

i will install the analyzer and will check from there.

errors on DC; isn't it should be reported to Event viewer as well (if i'm not mistaken)?? i've run dcdiag and netdiag; all are pass.

also no logs from open managed as well. really hate it if no errors come up.

thanks for your help and will let you know the progress.

Cheers,

hi mass2612,
the server been running great; no major issue up until now.
just 1 thing, the page file on the server is really high; sitting on 3.01GB.

is that looks okay? the physical mem is 2GB.

Hi again,

Yes a 3GB page file should be ok. Standard recommendation is 1.5 times the amount of RAM therefore 2GB + 1GB = 3GB. That should be fine. I would only mess around with the page file if you are having a specific memory issue.
