Assign values to Hidden Field VBScript

I'm basically trying to sum a database field into a hidden field and display it on the screen in a table cell.

While blah blah blah
Hidden field = Hidden field + Database Field

What is the problem?

Why not make the sum  in SQL?
SELECT SUM(fieldname) AS totalsum FROM tablename

Seriously??? you should consider revising the title of this thread.  Reason:
I am searching for vbscript solutions... and this isn't really a vbscript solution, its a work around to a specific problem, which is resolved in SQL... which really wastes a lot of time for those of us who are seeking vbscript code....  The only thing this has to do with setting values in a hidden field using vbscript is that the person asking the question originally wanted to use vbscript... and ended up using SQL instead.  Unfortunately SQL won't resolve all of the problems in the world that have to do with setting hidden fields using VBScript.
Thanks.
