How to set Exchange 2003 for POP3 / IMAP and OWA

Hi,

Just set yesterday new 2003 SBS R2 box with Exchange. The domain name is "domain_name.lcl", server name is DOMAIN, I can send and receive emails, but only from workstations which are part of the domain and connected to Exchange via Outlook. To set workstations to communicate with Exchange I use DOMAIN.domain_name.lc as server address and then Outlook can find user in AD. But what will be the mail server name from outside? There are people with Macs and Windows XP Home which cannot be a part of domain so they should access it using POP3 or IMAP. Also, there are some blackberries/smartphones they want to receive email as well.

This new server replaced old W2K server with exchange and uses the same IP address, I did not change any DNS records.

First of all, I don't know what will be POP3/IMAP server name. I know what the IP address is, and I am sure that mail.domain_name.com DNS record contain the right address of the server as it was receiving email before I switched the boxes. I assume that probably I did not set proper things on the server.

Can you please walk me through this process? At least (if it easier) I can enable OWA so they can send and receive emails from the browser, and then I can work with enabling POP3/IMAP...Eighter way, I need one of them up and running before the users kill me :-)

Thanks.

It looks like the first step will be to enable POP3 email for users with Macs, OWA requirest too many complicated steps which I simply can't do at this time.

So let's go on POP3/SMTP.

I am sure that ports 25 and 110 are opened. From this point what I have to do?

What I have to check on the server to ensure that it is ready for POP3/IMAP? I did try to connect using server's IP address (it is the same as mail.domain_name.com) or using mail.domain_name.com as Incoming server address but I cannot connect. The message on my Mac was: "IMAP server 200.xxx.xxx.194 is not responding". Please help.
As with almost anything, start at the source first.

Access the server and test your configuration there before expanding to an outside client.

Use Telnet to test whether the server is communicating properly.

I don't know how to test and what to expect, I need help with every step. As I said, Exchange is sending and receiving emails without problems, I need to connect to it using POP3/IMAP.

I went to Exchange management console - Protocols and found that default virtual POP3 and IMAP servers are not running. I did try to start IMAP server (right click on it and Start) but got error message after 30 seconds that "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".

awaiting....
Did you go to these links?

Configureing POP3/IMAP:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995729.aspx
http://www.petri.co.il/smtp_pop3_and_telnet.htm

The first two give instructions on how to configure.  The third one gives instructions on how to test.

I asked my friend who is Linux admin to test both ports and he said they are open. The ports are open, but maybe appropriate services/servers (POP3, IMAP) simply are not configured on the server and that's why I can't access it from outside. So I need to ensure that this part of setup is dome. Any ideas? C'mon guys!
Just fixed the problem with POP3 / IMAP - by default, both services are stopped and that's why the server cannot accept connections. Once I started them, everything went through and now I can use POP3 or IMAP to connect to the server. It was simple, but nobody told me...

However, I will keep this discussion open until I'm done with OWA setup in next few days. I will need to clarify how to enable OWA on this server and what is involved so your help with this will be greatly appreciated.
