Windows XP keeps logging off!

When I try to entre the computer, inserting password on the Welcome Screen, it enters and then it keeps logging off, just seeing the background screen for some seconds.
I have installed Norton and might deleted some adware that was asked in the virus search!
I don't have windows CD as this is a pre-installed version in the Sony Vaio.
I have tried to start as administrator, but also keeps logging off!
I have tried to start on every mode, from last known configuration to safe mode  through safe mode with everything and without them!!!
Nothing!!
I came accross some explanation on the internet to change the registry, but I can't even log to anything!
Is there any program I can download that I could boot from a CD and then fix teh problem?

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Though there are many suggesitions to come out of this, nothing helps. I say this to you because, I tried to resolve the same issue that i faced. Better try backing up your data and do a fresh install. or else lets hope better luck to you to solve this issue.

Sounds like you need to run a system restore.  If you can get to the recovery console, I will post a script you can run.

Can you access this machine's registry from another system on the network?

If so....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Userinit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,     <~~notice the comma....

while youre in there...

shell=explorer.exe
