Is there a way to programmatically convert Office documents into thumbnails *without* Microsoft Office? I want to be able to generate thumbnails for all documents in a particular folder but don't want to expose my server to the security flaws of Microsoft Office.

Thumbnails are the final goal, but if I had a process that created PDFs that would suffice. An answer to this question would provide a link to a tool that does this sort of conversion. Perhaps with OpenOffice, but not necessarily.

Hi kooba,

Does Sharepoint qualify as "not Office?"  I know that SP does this sort of thing quickly and easily.  If SP is not an option, you may be looking at getting some enterprise type CMS package that can create thumbnails and that gets pricey.

You can do this with OpenOffice + VB macro to generate a PDF and then use ImageMagick to convert PDFs to thumbnails. All opensource software.

Could you provide an example of how you accomplished this with those products?

Thanks!
