I just installed Exchange 2007 on a freshly formatted workstation, that has been added to a new DC.
I think I am having some communication issues between my Exchange server and my DC.

Upon the first install, the check passed however the Mailbox role install failed.
I checked the event log and it had a lot of:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      MSExchangeServiceHost
Event Category:      (1)
Event ID:      2011
Date:            12/4/2007
Time:            3:33:25 PM
User:            N/A
Computer:      exchange server
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 2011 ) in Source ( MSExchangeServiceHost ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: The Exchange Topology service did not return a suitable Domain Controller..

I reran the setup and it was able to install successfully without a problem.
Now in the event log, I get the following about every 6 / 7 minutes:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      MSExchange ADAccess
Event Category:      (3)
Event ID:      2102
Date:            12/4/2007

You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: MAD.EXE, 2224, server.company.local
.
Within the same minute or two, I get the following event errors as well:

   at Microsoft.Exchange.MessageSecurity.EdgeSync.ADAMUserManagement.RenewEdgeSyncCredentials(Dictionary`2 credentialProbeRecords).

When I try to access OWA, IE throws back the following error:

Outlook Web Access did not initialize. An event has been logged so that the system administrator can resolve the issue. Please contact technical support for your organization.
The Exchange Topology service did not return a suitable Domain Controller.

So I have only 2 servers, one is the DC, and the other Exchange.
IP information on exchange points to the DC for DNS.  The servers have no problems seeing each other, and I can't figure out what I am missing here.

If any extra information is needed, please let me know.
Thanks

Did you install Ex 2007 sp1 or RTM?

almost seems like the install did not go through properly, are there any errors in the setup logs?

Is the exch server in the exch server group on the dc/gc?

It is RTM, I haven't checked the setup logs yet but the server is indeed in the exch server group on the DC/GC.

Ok the night before I had attempted to install exch several times and it kept failing saying that it couldn't find AD, due to the fact that I had the wrong DNS info on the exch server (it was pointed to my T1 dns info).
Yesterday I corrected that, setting the correct DNS server on my DC within the DHCP scope so that exch would know where to look for AD.
I also ran setup /p /on:VAC from the exch disc on the exch server to prep AD and the domain prior to rerunning the install.  VAC was what I had chosen to be my organization name.

The next problem I ran into was I had forgotten to raise the domain level of my DC to 2003, which the install precheck notified me of, and I then corrected that problem and reran the install once again (up to this point, it had never even installed a single component or role, as it never passed the prechecks).

Once I feel all my ducks are lined up it finally makes it past the precheck phase and begins installing the roles.  CAS, HUB, but then fails on the Mailbox role.  I checked event vwr and you could see similar errors about communication issues w/ the DC, so I thought maybe there was a replication issue w/ the DC/GC and just attempted to reinstall the Mailbox role by going into add/rem programs and adding it that way by choosing change on exch.  That time the installation completely finished and this is where I stand today.

I haven't tried actually creating any mailboxes because I don't have any outlook clients to test with yet, but since I am seeing all kinds of communication issues with the DC/GC and with OWA, I'm very pessimistic about this setup being healthy.

Below are some error clips from the setup log, with the last marker indicating the error installing the Mailbox role.  I am completely willing to email my setup log and an html output of the errors (used with the out-html / out-ie scripts), just let me know.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am under a good amount of pressure to get this up and running.

Just wondering if I need to upgrade to premium service to get some feedback on this issue, as this will be 2nd question I have posted in which I will have to resort to Microsoft for assistance.

I completely reimaged both the dc and the exch servers from scratch and am receiving the exact same errors from the original post.  There are some additional errors all regarding problems communicating with the dc / gc, I can post those if needed.

Thanks

FYI in case someone else has this problem, it turned out to be the checksum setting in my NIC configuration on the exchange server.  By default it is set to enabled, just disabled it.
Also, had to apply this kb article regarding tcp chimney: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912222

No more topology or other service errors on the exchange server.

Hipnotik: Which checksum do you refer to?
  • Offload Transmit TCP Checksum
  • Offload Transmit IP Checksum
  • Offload Receive TCP Checksum
  • Offload Receive IP Checksum
Or all?
