VPN connections keeps popping up when I lose any kind of network connection

I have a Windows XP machine where I'm using the XP VPN client to connect to Server 2003 RAS.

It works fine when I want to use it.  The only thing is that this is on a laptop, and I only use the connection to remotely access a client site.  However, the VPN network connection comes up every 5 minutes or so whenever I'm not actively connected to A network, either wired or wireless.  It will also popup if I'm connected to a network, and just release/renew my IP.   I checked the properties of the connection, and I do not see anything about automatically connecting...  When the VPN prompt occurrs, I have to cancel it before I can do anything else network related.

I'd like it to not automatically prompt me to dial a VPN connection.  Alternatively, if I just need to ditch the windows VPN client, I'm happy to do that.  I would just want recommendations on FREE alternatives.

Thank you

Have a look in Internet Explorer / Tools / Internet Options / Connections and verify that 'Never dial a connection' is checked.

You were absolutely correct.  Since I wasn't using IE...I use Firefox, it never occurred to me to look in IE.  Of course the way IE is embedded it is certainly not surprising.

Thank you, points are yours.
