A large majority of the book also applies to SQL 2000.  The text does indicate where something only works in SQL 2005.

i started with Rob Veira's book for SQL 2000
gr8 book...

this is the 2005 version.

I am reading Inside SQL series as mentioned above now, but wont recommend it for beginners...
