Windows update Vista error 80070426 No updates installing

I cannot seem to nail down one thing that relates to this issue directly. I have 7 updates that want to install. It appears they download, but error as failed when the attempt is to install them. I have looked to makes sures services were running and I have more then enough drive space. Any suggestions?

Have you checked whether the Cryptographic Services application is running?   Type SERVICES.MSC in the search dialog box, hit Enter, reply to the UAC prompt, and check whether the status is enabled or automatic.  If not, double click it in the list and set it to automatic.

I did check and it is automatic and running..

Further details when I clicked properties it would not let me in. I do see a Failed 15100 erro under the description. It appears this is the root cause but it is set as started.

So it appears you cannot get to the Properties page to stop the service and restart it.  Try it this way:  find the shortcut for Command Prompt on your Start Menu (under All Programs -> Accessories), right click it and select Run as Administrator, then type these two commands:

net stop cryptsvc

not start cryptsvc

This didn't work for me - I have the exact same problem and running the net stop cryptsvc didn't do anything for me.

The above didn't help in my case (Windows Server 2008 64-bit Enterprise in a VMware VM, Windows Updates broke immediately after installing the OS.)  I fixed this in the end by clicking on the "Find updates for other Windows products."  Updates now working.
