Is it trying to connect to an old printer share or connect to a currently unavailable network/local printer?

Hi p-henderson,

Heres a couple things to try ...
1. Make sure you have a default printer selected.
2. open the file directly from Word - File > Open
3. Copy the file locally and open in directly from Word.
4. The document may have an attached template that you may not have. If this is the case - check out this link ... http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;830561&spid=2530&sid=36

Hope this helps

ASKER

i have just noticed that the microsoft xps document writer is missing. formerly image writer.
does anyone know how to get this back ?

Try running a repair on Word/Office, should reinstall this for you if you select the restore defaults option
office 2007 does'nt have the great detect and repair feature, instead it uses a diagnostic tool.
I ran this and it did'nt pick it up
Damn, sorry I didnt see that this was 2007!!
