There is a nice downloadable document on how to do just this on the following page:

http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/Search.aspx?kbID=1005472&sg=SG_QUICKBOOKSPREMIER2008_1_4&mod=9-4-2007+6:40:15

You'll want to click the link on that page for: " Download the QuickBooks Import Excel and CSV.zip file"
And that zip file contains and "Import from Excel" manual that leads you through it.

Let me know how it goes!

This document is dated 2006.  I am using QuickBooks 2008.   I did the import into QB 2005 PRO, which works (unlike 2008).  I then exported from 2005 and imported in 2008.

I am done importing so we can close this question.  Thank you for your input.

Sorry, I didn't know you had solved your problem (the question was still open)!
That was the document that quickbooks provides for Quickbooks 2008 - they must have dated documentation (very dissappointing, I must say).
Enjoy the holidays!
