Hi dkarpekin,
Performances comes with price also. Usually I work will around my budget to get the best out of it.
ATI and Nvidia are both comparable, best is to check if the game is designed for any specific graphics brand.
Some game sites do run performance tests.
Processor type with its equivalent ram amount also plays a part in overall game performance. For most games 1GB Ram is enuff on winxp and pref 2GB on win vista. Dual Core is a gd choice as mentioned b. Delphineous.
As for multiplayer gaming it depends if you are playing in a LAN setting home networking or online via internet gamespy. Usually these have to with ISP speeds given or client PCs (graphics settings etc).
Hope it helps.

For both Crysis and CoD4 you *can* play these with Vista 2GB RAM a Pentium D and nVidia 7900GT at medium graphics. Putting a mid range Intel Dual-Core and any DX10 capable card (I would still lean toward nVidia at the moment) would mean you can run easily with medium settings and possibly push higher. A 500W PSU would be ideal and the cheapest of all of the components you need to think about.
Whatever game you are playing will struggle more as you add players and NPCs to the screen and increasing RAM (or buying a higher end DX10 card) will help solve this or at least push the bottleneck to your networking connection. Beware the 4GB limit on 32-bit operating systems.
Would certainly avoid server based systems as publisher/designer teams are not coding for that environment.
When you are bored with Crysis try Bioshock with the same settings ;)

There are fanboys on each side of the fence when it comes to ATI or Nvidia, and also when it comes to AMD or Intel. They all make good products, and not so good products. You aren't going to do better or worse because of the brand name you pick. It's going to be which component you choose from that company that matters the most.
Personally, I could care less on Intel or AMD as they both make good products. It is dependent on which has a better deal or "bang for the buck" when I go to purchase. On the videocard scene, I personally like Nvidia better as I have used them for years and more comfortable with their config interface. But ATI has some excellent cards as well.
You pick from any of these companies wisely, and you should be fine. All good respectable companies.

Intel Duo Core 2 is an excellent choice for Processor on any powerhouse system, especially if you will be running Windows Vista.
