Changing the default Instance and Named instance between SQL2000 and SQL2005

Last Modified: 2012-05-05
I currently have SQL2000 and SQL2005 installed on my production server. Currently the SQL2000 Instance is the Default and the SQL2005 is the Named instance. I need these to be the other way around: SQL2005 -Default and SQL2000 - Named.

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

>I'd dearly love to know why the SQL 2005 needs to be the default instance.
I agree... there should be no (technical) reason for doing so?

... and that you have to reinstall a instance to change the name/default...

The Application that connects to the Name Instance requires SQL2005 and it is having trouble connecting to a named instance.

can you show the connection string and the error you get?

Commented:
some apps i have seen create a dynamic conection string by returning the windows host name and use that as the server name within the connection string ... it's not the way to do it ... but i have seen it done this way.  To swap them round I would install another Named sql 2000 instance onto the server .. move the sql 2000 db's across .. remove the default instance ....  install another instance of sql 2005 on the server as default ...  move the databases from 2005 to the new 2005 default instance .. then remove the named instance from the server .....
