Server name change creates - Exchange virtual smtp errors

Last Modified: 2010-04-21
Hello Experts,

I made the unfortunate mistake of renaming an Exchange 2003 front-end OWA server.  OWA did not function after the rename, so I named it BACK to the old name.  OWA does work now, but the SMTP virtual server is not functional .  When checking the message queues it shows an error:

Exchange System Manager failed to retrieve queues for the SMTP Virtual Server (error code = 0x800706D9).  Check the event log and verify that the required services are running.

I am unable to start the SMTP virtual server and instead get two error event logs :

Error Event 429
Virtual Server 1: The specified mail queue directory is not valid. Cannot start the SMTP Service.

Error Event 520
Virtual Server 1: The specified mail drop directory (E:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\PickUp) is not valid. Cannot start the SMTP service in mail-drop mode.

I am a little unsure about how to approach this one, and am trying to avoid a complete reinstall/configuration of Exchange 2003 on this server.  Any advice is much appreciated.
