How to enable PDF Optimizer Menu Item

How do I enable the PDF Optimizer menu item in Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0? I see the menu item but it is grey and unavailable. I need to reduce the file size of a PDF. I made the mistake of scanning a bunch of b/w documents into a single color 300dpi PDF and need to reduce the file size after-the-fact.
Thanks.

Hi

Does it work with other PDF files or is it just an issue with the file you tried? I wonder if it is a file format issue due to the scanned pages.

v7 has a 'reduce file size' item on the File menu, I can't recall whether v6 had this, but if it has try if that works.

it looks like it is enabled for some PDFs like those created from autocad drawings. the PDF in question is actuall a combination of scanned PDFs and Autocad, Word, Excel, and IE7 PDF prints. The reports are compiled with PDFs from about a dozen different sources. I'm not sure why the Optimizer would be disabled.

Hi

It does not look like there is any problem with Acrobat itself, otherwise you would not have PDF optimizer enabled at all...more likely is that some PDF header information blocking the menu item.

If you select aggressive compression options from Adobe Distiller and print the PDF the PDF again from Acrobat to Adobe PDF does this bring the file size down?

Thanks,
I tried printing the first half of the original PDF (112 pages, 44MB) after setting the Distiller to 'Smallest File Size". The file size for the first half is not only 800K.
I think there might be something wrong with the original PDF. When printing the second half I get this error when the print operation crashes near page 90. It looks like it has something to do with fonts or embedded jpgs.
