php rename. create new folder

Last Modified: 2008-02-01

I want to use php's rename to move a file to a new directory.

$file = "/path/to/folder1/filename.txt";
$newfile = "/path/to/folder2/directory1/another_directory/filename.txt";

      if (!rename($file, $newfile)) {
          echo "failed to copy $file... to download directory\n";

Permissions on folder1 and folder2 are both 777
/path/to/folder2/directory1                                   does not exist yet
/path/to/folder2/directory1/another_directory     does not exist yet

the error im getting is:
"No such file or directory in"

I believe the problem is coming form trying to move the file into directories that haven't been created yet.  Is there any way to get he files created if they don't exist or use the directory if it does exist?
