Make Form draw before Load event??

I'm  making a program with VB .NET 2003.   And it seems that when the form loads it executes the entire Load Event before it draws the form on the screen.  How can I make it so that the user can see the form right away isntead of waiting for the load event to execute?  Also, after the form does load, the users clicks a button which executes a pretty big function.  During this function, items are added to a ListView, but none of the items are displayed on screen until this function is completed, is there any way to force the form to redraw every time i add an item so the user can see the progress happening? Thanks.
