SLOW RESPONSE TO COMMANDS AND FREEZING OF THE COMPUTER

My computer is running Windows XP Professional is very slow to respond to commands. I tried to scan for viruses and delete them but is still slow. I thought maybe is overloading of the hard-drive is one of the causes but the free hard-drisk space is big. So, what might be the cause of this slow response by the computer if not the RAM size?

I am somewhat aggressive with dealing with such problems so to my opinion backup your important data format your system partition and do a fresh install of windows this will solve your problem but before doing this check that the processor fan is running properly because this is one of the most common causes of such behaviour

check if your disk is running in DMA mode, not PIO :
device manager>ide/atapi channels>primary channel>properties>advanced
