Blackberry Contacts not Syncing through BES

I have one user whose contacts are no longer syncing through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Everything else is syncing okay for that user [Calendar, Mail, etc.]

I've checked to make sure PIM Address Book sync is turned on in the user's profile. I checked the MAGT log. There are no "Address Book rescan" message in the log at all for that user. However, all other users are working just fine with the Address Book. It worked fine until about two weeks ago, and I can find "Address Book rescan" messages in the older logs. Then they just stop. I didn't see any error messages in the log after the last "Address Book rescan" message.

There aren't any strange error messages in the Event Log. It all seems like it might just be turned off somewhere, and we are overlooking something. However, I can't figure it out. I have not looked at the phone at all, is there a way to turn this off from the phone?

The phone is a Curve 8300. The BES version is 4.1.3.16, and it's Small Business Edition.

Thanks!

On the device from Address Book press the menu button and select Options and ensure Wireless Synch is on.  Also in the user Contacts in Outlook ensure there are no blank contacts (e.g. No first, last or company name) or and contacts with special characters (e.g. #$%&^). as these stop the wireless synch from occurring.

I double-checked the user's contacts, there are no blank contacts, or contacts with special characters. On the Curve, there is no option within the Address Book application for "Wireless Sync" the way there is on some older models. The option exists in the calendar, but not within the Address Book. I turned it off, and back on again just to try it.

Next, I completely removed the user from the BES server, re-added him, and re-activated the handheld. Same issue.

I received a warning messages in the Application Event Log when I did that. 20421, GetAndCreateFilderInfo OpenFolder failed. FolderID-0.

The user attempted to sync tasks, which he had never used before. It failed, and an error message was logged in the Event Viewer. 16082, Device responded DATABASE_NOT_FOUND against USE command. No record for this dataqbase will be synced.

I also looked through the event logs some more, and found a slew of warnings. All of them are event ID 20000 [SRP] Connection failed. They come in bunches of 8 or 10, about once every two weeks. They last for just a few minutes, logging several events within one second, and then pausing for a minute or two before logging a few more.

Any more ideas? This is getting more complicated, I'm raising the point value.

I assume you've already done the usual "resend service books" command on the BES server for the particular device that's having issues?  I'm actually encountering similar behavior to what you're describing, but I'm having it with multiple users.  Many sites I've come across online suggest first to try resending the service books.  Unfortunately for me it has not helped fix the issue at all.
Remove the Battery on the device for 2 minutes.

Every contact in Outlook need at least a name (first or last) or company name. In Outlook you will find them under:

Unnamed

Delete this contacts or give them a name or company name. Then with the next slow sync you get the contacts again. You can force the slow sync with:

Address Book/Options/Wireless Sync/Off
Save
Address Book/Options/Wireless Sync/On
Save

If this all not works. Wipe the device and activate the user again.

Bob
Yea, I have tried to "resend service books" -- like in your situation, it didn't help.

I also have looked for blank contacts, and have reset calendar syncing. However, I don't see any option for wireless sync on/off within the Address Book of the Curve that I am having problems with, only some older Blackberries. Should I have this option on the Curve?

I have not tried wiping the device yet, because the user has a few other e-mail accounts etc. configured, and I didn't really want to force him to reconfigure everything. Perhaps I will backup the device first, and then try it.

Thanks

My CEO was having this issue and I couldn't figure it out.
That did the trick!  It works .  Any ideas why this might have stopped working?

Thanks ....... garycutri

Hey guys,
Thanks for the solution.
Any way to do this on a BlackBerry Pearl? I'm having the same issue on that phone, but the accepted solution doesn't work for this particular phone.. any suggestions?
On a BlackBerrry Pearl it is ALT 788445
Thank you!!
That was it, worked like a charm!!
Create a new ost file for outlook and try to activate blackberry hh agin.
Thank you.
On a BlackBerrry Pearl it is ALT 788445 ... how about a Blackberry Curve? This doesnt work on the Curve...
Worked for us, BUT all 35 of our BB's stopped contact sync'n at the same time. Sure I can go to all of them and fix, but something seems very wrong with that.  We have a very similar setup, and very similar enviroments of that logs look good, services look good, tried the same troubleshooting approaches, still didnt work until I did this. Im running the same rev 4.1.3.16, ent. version. From my general knowledge not carrier specific, but sidenote all our phones are on Sprint/Nextel.

Thanks for the gem of the trick. Just wish I knew why it stopped working in the first place.
Thanks for the secret menu, its really resolve quickly.

Thanks again.
Anyone know what the way to do this for a Storm is?
The procedure is the same for the Storm - only difference is that when you hold down ALT (i.e. "?123"), the letters disappear.
hold the "?123" key until it locks and then type 9!6/ - the symbols hiding behind CNFG
Thank you so much, worked perfectly.
I had this problem too on my new Tour. I fixed it by deleting the "Desktop" service books, and resending them from the BES. The only thing that errored out was Application Permissions. I believe what caused this was the fact that I used BBDM to switch devices.

Hope this helps.
The CNFG works on the Verizon World Edition BB.  Thanks for your help!!!
This worked for the BOLD as well; thanks!

Does anyone know if this works for the Curve 8330?
It worked for my Curve 8330
Worked perfectly for my CEO's Curve 8330.   Thank you so much!

Adding this for people who hit this thread in future and run Symantec Enterprise Vault against their Exchange environment.
Same symptoms, turning wireless sync off and on had no effect, resend of service books, reactivation, popping the battery out, etc = no effect.
We popped open the users contacts folder in Outlook to check for symbols / blanks, etc and all looked good.  Finally tried opening a contact and found the issue.  We use Enterprise Vault and all the contacts had been vaulted. They look fine until you pop them open or get the icon field displaying and it turns out they're all just shortcuts.  Restore the items from the vault and you're good to go.  Not something we thought to check because we don't generally vault contacts...
Hopefully this'll help out someone else.
Thanks for the info here.

This worked perfectlly for my end user and he's good to go now on his Storm2.
Unfortunately, it didn't work on my BB Bold 9700. I made it work by sending "Generate Activation Email" from the BES server. It re-synch all and now it is working normally.
