So i just got dual 8600gt's and it came with company of heroes with Directx10.  Before we start, i have all the latest drivers for my video cards, sound cards, motherboard, directx10, etc etc.....ANYWAYS, when I play COH on minimal settings it runs fine.  When I try to put on ULTRA settings or even HIGH Settings it crashes.  Even medium settings don't work.  I have tried reading on different sites and no one could figure out why the game does this.  Hardly anyone can get it working with high settings.  I wanted to test it out because I have a high end system.  The things they concluded "COULD" be the problem causing this is that the GPU of the video cards are heating up too quickly , causing it to shut down.  Either that or someone said that their Memory settings were wrong in bios.  I havent fooled with my memory settings in bios at all.  I do have SLI enabled.  Ive tried it without SLI and it still does it.  I would have thought that since SLI uses two processors in one, it would compensate or something. I have tried using programs to monitor the temperature of my GPU's but I cant get any of them working.  Any help would be awesome, as I would like to have at least medium to high settings for this game because i know my system can pump it out.  System specs---

AMDx2 Athlon 2.4 Processors
SLI-   x2 8600gt's
2 GB Memory DDR2
DVDRW Drive
160 GB hard drive
DFI nForce motherboard

PLEASE HELP!

Watch Question

What OS are you running?  How much memory do you have on your video cards (each?)  What is your FSB speed of your board?  What is the speed and CAS latency of your RAM?  When you try to run the game on Medium or better how many added programs are running in the background of your system?  I checked the game site and your system looks good enough to play the game.  Sorry for the added questions but it will help me to identify any hardware/software problems you might have.

Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.......256 mb ddr2 on each card, i am not sure of the FSB of my motherboard......
here is the info i got for my memory--
Capacity 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Speed DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency 5
Timing 5-5-5-18
Voltage 1.8V
Heat Spreader Yes
Recommend Use High Performance or Gaming Memory

i close all my background programs when running the game, so that is not the issue. my system is definately able to play the game, its a high end system, ive way past the recommended system requirements. please help! i can run any other game fine on high settings, even with programs running in the background, this doesn't make sense.  except for crysis that is heh. it just seems like the cards do not like this game. it  might have something to do with the new DirectX10 system, but even when i turn off DX10 it doesn't matter. please help!

i am running 1.71. i know i downloaded a couple patches just to play online, but one of them that was 1.7 gb never installed, its just downloaded on my pc.  i finally got the game to run at ultra settings, but i turned off anti-aliasing which was the problem i guess.  the game runs a little laggy on high settings, and i feel that i should be able to run the game at these high settings since i have dual 8600gt's and a pretty high end system. i was also wondering if anyone knew if XP was better for running games than Vista is? i know xp uses a lot less space because recommended memory for vista is 2 gb and XP is only 1 gb i believe.  would i get better performance if i switched back to XP to run games? please let me know!

this is what happened. i just installed xp pro. i ran the game and it is absolutely amazingly real. i have it on medium settings and it looks so good . i tried to go on ultra settings with highest AA setting and it looks amazing , but lags. so if i take off aa or lower it and use ultra settings, the game will run smooth. it just amazing that this game improved so much just after installing xp.  vista is not compatible or uses too much memory or something.  how much memory can xp detect? thanks!

I'm running 2.103!

Register with the THQ site and download from the link here: http://www.thq-games.com/uk/help/patches/605/1?game=605

The issue is with DX10 patching, M$ changed the gameplan for programmers halfway through CoH's development and TXQ were given the wrong spec for DX10 by M$ as a result in Vista the interface between DX10 and your hardware is incredibly hardware combination specific.  THQ have been playing catch up since.  The patch for 1.70 should have fixed things for most players but there are still reported errors such as yours and the version 2 patch is meant to solve those (it was released this November).

You can read the history of the patches here:
http://www.vgpro.com/games/pc/company_of_heroes/file/en_2102_2103_patchexe

You can stay with DX9 in XP and it'll run with no problem but if you have Ultimate you will still get an improvement with your paired 8600GTs

32-bit XP can use a maximum of 4GB RAM - same as 32-bit Vista

well i can run directx10 in xp i believe.  anyways, i read on many sites that xp can get up to 20 more fps than vista can. i think it is because vista requires so much more, and having xp lets me maximize my system out.  i have tried turning off directx10 in the game using Vista, and it made little difference at all. it ran a little smoother, but graphics were still horrible. i am going to stay with xp because its so much less cluttered and it's just a lot user friendly. until they stop supporting xp, that's when i will switch over. thanks! even by then i should have at least quad-core cpu's, 4 gb ram, 1 tb hard drive, and dual 9600gt's. and then i could run Vista no problem. tahnks again for your help though!

i want to stick with windows xp for now until vista is fully compatible with everything. the game doesnt look half bad how i play it now and it runs so much smoother. if you could help me figure out when directx10 is available for xp i will give you the points for this question.  i have seen some sites where it is available now, but it requires registry adding to and stuff and i dont wanna mess with it. thanks!
