Checksum Failure - boot failure
I am building a new PC, based on the ASUS P5B-Plus m/b. Intel E6750 CPU installed - 2 SATA disk, running in RAID mode 1 (mirror). WinXP SP2 o/s installed.
On boot, system reports 'Intel CPU uCode loading error' - not a big problem, it just causes a restart of the boot process, and invites 'press F1' to continue the boot process. However from other posts I inferred that the BIOS did not recognise this particular model CPU. And that a BIOS update would fix the problem
The original BIOS description is:
Model P5B-Plus
Version 0301
Chipset Intel-BW
Date 02/07/2007 - 17:09:31
Bios Type AMI
BIOS size 1024k
I downloaded from the ASUS site an updated BIOS - P5B-Plus-ASUS-1002.ROM
I used the ASUS BIOS Update facility - 'Update the BIOS through a BIOS file'. This appeared to work perfectly, and finished with an invitation to reboot.
On rebooting, the screen dispayed a message about a checksum failure, and I selected the option to open the BIOS to see what I might change to fix the problem - seeing nothing to change, I F10'd out of the BIOS. The PC closed down, and now appears to be totally dead. The power on/off switch fails even to start the fans, although the m/b LED indicates that the board is powered.
I saved the original BIOS on a floppy.
I'm tempted to clear the RTC RAM (Mains off, remove battery, move jumper etc...) bur would appreciate advice before doing anything to aggravate a dismal situation.
Hoping......

'No further problems' - if only!!!
After moving some settings, data etc... from the old machine onto the P5B, I noticed that the RAID1 configuration I had previously set up, had disappeared.
I have set up RAID1 again on the new BIOS, but on trying to boot, I got the message 'NTLDR is missing'.
I am now trying to re installing WinXP. So far I have encountered:
Installation hung, showing 25% disk checked
2 blue screens (0000007B & 00330027)
and WIndows root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt.
Was there an easier way forward?

i would test ram and disk, to be sure about the basics; if you need links, just tell me
