Back-Up

I have had ongoing issues with our back-up and here is my latest observation:

1) The 'Volume Shadow Copy' is set to automatic.
2) At every back-up failure the 'Volume Shadow Copy' service is 'Stopped'.
3) I restart the service and can then complete a successful back-up.
4) The next time the scheduled back-up occurs, it fails and I find that the 'Volume Shadow Copy' is 'Stopped'.
5) I have set the recovery in the event of failue but that has not helped.

My question is - Why does the 'Volume Shadow Copy' service Stop and what should I do to prevent this from happening?

Thank you.

The Volume Shadow Copy services is a MS service and needs to be set up as MANUAL and not automatic
It allows you to take a snapshot of SHADOW COPY COMPONENTS
if the VSS is stopping or is not able to start properly then any application requesting a Snapshot will not be able to backup the resource
Ususally restarting the server fixes the issue with the VSS
Ensure that the OS has been updated and you have all the latest SP and hot fixes installed
If the issue persists you will need to call Microsoft for some INTERNAL DOWNLOADS that are available with  them to fix VSS related issues
Also I noticed that you are using the SBS
in SBS the EXCHANGE WRITERS are disabled by default,so if you try and take a backup of exchange resources using a 3rd party application, you may face similar issues

Thank you for the comprehensive response iamthecreator. I will review, check and test and then provide feedback.

I noticed that every 'manual' back-up was successful but every scheduled back-up failed. I read that one may have conflicts with more than one task addressing the Volume Shadow Copy simultaniously. This prompted me to change the time of the scheduled back-up and it appears that the problem is now resolved.

The above reminded me that I had changed the time of the back-up to an earlier slot. The resulting backup 'chaos' has made me forget why i had chnaged the time in the first place :-(
