Gets "Error! Reference source not found." when opening Word document from Outlook attachment.

Alright, I have a user that is getting an email with a word attachment that has fields in it.  When he opens it from outlook it opens up in read mode where it zooms it up and splits it down the middle like a book.  It displays fine, but then he closes the read mode and all the fields values are replaced with the error message: "Error! Reference source not found."  I've found out that he can disable the read mode and it works fine, but he doesn't want to do that because apparently it used to work.

I've got absolutely no idea what to do with this.  Also, the file opens fine if he forwards it to me or one of the other IT guys up here, but if I refresh the fields it gives me the error.  Is there some setting I can change that refreshes the fields when he closes the read mode?
