asked on

"The operation failed. An object could not be found". When opening attachments.

Hi, I have a XP SP2 machine with Office 2003.
Outlook is connected to exchange using RPC over HTTP.

If I try to open or save any attachments I get a pop up with the following error.

"The operation failed. An object could not be found".

I have another PC using same OS and Office and I can open all attachments on this PC. I can also open everything on OWA.

I have re-created the outlook profile several times and it still does not work. This includes new .OST files each time.

I originally had Office 2007 with this error but rolled back to Office 2003 in an attempt to fix the issue.
I have searched all over Google and have found no successful solutions.

I am hoping someone can help me. Cheers. Chris.

Have you also deleted the extend.dat file? If you haven't then try that else try using the office removal tool: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011401771033.aspx
to remove office, then remove the profile and files under C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\*.*, then re-install and try again.

Good luck!
Hi,

Are you also able to try to delete and re-create the Windows user profile on the system? A lot of Outlook data gets written to there also and creating a new Windows profile may help. In order to test that you could logon as someone else on the system and setup their Outlook and test if you recieve the same errors. If you don't then that would be worth trying.
Hi,

Try creating a new user account and login in to the new user account acnd check how to works.

If it works fine user profile corruption

Can also try running user profile clean up tool

ASKER

I tried using another user profile. This did not work.

I also removed the extend.bat and recreated the .OST again and this did not work also.

I have not used the Office removal tool method as I am overseas and cannot re-install Office at this time.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I don't think you will find anything other then a removal and re-install to work if multple users on the same PC are having the same issue.
I will give that a go next week and will let you all know.

Thanks.

I have already removed 2007 and gone back to 2003. So I can agree with you based on that alone.

I only re-formatted a month ago! Oh well. Time to virtualise all my software.
Perhaps it is something that you are installing after outlook then - an add-on, AV software, something
I'm having the same problem at work.  Myself and the IT Department Head cannot open attachments, however our Administrator, HelpDesk Cordinator and 2nd PC Tech do not currently have any problems.

I have currently only created new Outlook profiles, deleted the extend.dat and tried creating a profile on a computer where the problem does not currently exist.  No change.

On a side note, we are using Symantec Endpoint Protection.
I decided to reformat the PC as it was just not worth the hassle anymore. I have gone back to office 2007 and it works perfectly again.

I too was also using SEP originally but found this was a hassle also. Went back to Avast AV but that did not fix the problem.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Good ol' Symantec shaftware to the rescue :)
The symantec link above was the answer to the attachment problem in Outlook.
It was the installation of the Symantec Multi-Tier protection and the Outlook functionality that caused the problem.
I have SEp as well. Found that I get that error if SEP is disabled (I had to disable it to work with something else). Once I re-enabled SEP and restarted Outlook, I was able to open attachments again. I'm running SEP 11.0.1000 on my laptop, I'll try upgrading to 11.0.2000, and see if the issue goes away.
however, sp 3 does work in certain instances. i tried on one computer and it worked. the next time i tried on another computer it did not work.
I too am having this problem.  I am running Outlook 2007 on Windows XP Professional.  A previous user commented that they're running Symantec Endpoint Protection, which is what I am running.  I had this problem on two computers.  One of them, Symantec was just disabled in the system tray somehow and all I did was re-enable it and Outlook allowed attachments to be opened.  The other one required a patch from Symantec: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/4430b74b4f4ba805882573c60003a35c?OpenDocument
If you are running anti virus software that checks email this may work (for symantec)
1) From the Outlook menu click Tools/Trust Center
2) Click the Add-ins tab on the left menu
3) Choose Exchange Client Extensions from the Manage: drop down menu at the bottom of the window and click Go
4) Uncheck Symantec Antivirus Outlook Protection then click OK
