Each time the problem occurs it is due to the lgnd.dll.  Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can do to keep this from happening?

Please let me know if there is addtional information that I would need to provide.

The only mention I can find of lgnd.dll at Microsoft's site is in the list of files included with Visio 2003 SP3 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923620/), which says that it should be version 11.0.8161.0 -- and that is the version number shown in the middle of the three dumps you provided. There's no mention of what this particular dll does.

Do dynamic connectors work in some templates but not others? i.e., does this error occur using just one specific template or with all templates?

Do you have any Visio add-ins running? Try disabling them:
1) Select Tools/Macros/COM Add-ins, then uncheck any add-ins listed;
2) Select Tools/Options, click the Advanced tab then the File Paths... button. Delete the text, if any, after Start-up. (If there's a path name there, you should save it so you can restore it later).

Does this change the behavior?

Finally, although it's shooting in the dark a bit, you might try renaming the dll so it's not present at all and see what happens (or doesn't). Might not tell us anything but sometimes new behavior can point in a different direction.

Once my user gets in this morning I'll check to see if there are any add-ins running.

The one thing that I can tell you is that the project that my user has been creating has started failing now after the file has reached it's 10th page.    Each page has a legend associated with the various objects that she has on each page, but it wasn't until she got onto the 10th page that she is now reporting the problem.

I'll report anything new in a little while.

Scott:

When I look at Tools--Macros--COM Add-ins there is nothing.
Tools--Options--Adv Tab--File Path--nothing

renaming lgnd.dll and then restarting Visio causes Visio to say installing and then it puts lgnd.dll back into the directory and as soon as I go to copy On-Page reference onto a page in the project Visio crashes.

Thanks for trying those steps. One question -- when you said "as soon as I go to copy On-Page reference onto a page", did you mean that you are copying and pasting an on-page reference, or are you dragging that shape from the stencil onto the page?

Is it possible for you to post the drawing here so I can look at it? I don't want you to do so if it contains any proprietary information, but if it doesn't, I'd llke to see whether the problem is reproducible on my system. (If you do post it, I probably won't have time to look at it until tonight.)

The crash occurs when you drag the shape from the stencil list.

I'm working on approval to post a screen capture.

I've attached a screen cap of the diagram that is causing the problem.  The other issue that I've noticed is that (as I've mentioned previously) this file has 10 pages in it.  On some pages when I drage a stencil on to the screen Visio crashes, but not on every one.

I'll have to give the suggestion a try tomorrow.

Earlier I had copied all objects from the drawing and pasted everything on to new document (not just a new page from the same project) and then dragged an object onto the newly copied page and there was no crash.  I will start tomorrow with creating a new page in the same project and copy over the items and let you know what happens.

Thanks again for your help!

So I followed your suggestions while I had the user who had first encountered the problem sitting with me and we have definitely narrowed down the problem with the legend on the page.

Some how the legend on the page appears to have gotten corrupted.

On one of the other pages we saw that when we added a new object from the stencil list it was dynamically added to the legend.  However when we attempted to add an object on the page that had the corrupted legend Visio would crash.

In another test we deleted the legend on the page that normally would crash and then dragged items from the stencil and voila Visio wouldn't crash.

One other odd thing that I found in playing with creating a new page and then copying the legend was that if I selected a legend from a completed diagram and then copied it, went to the newly created page and pasted the legend I would only get the top portion of the legend (as would be expected since there were no objects on the new page yet).  However if I copied the legend a 2nd time from the completed diagram and then pasted it to the new page I would get the full legend from the copied page pasted onto the new "clean" page.  One other odd thing then happened (only once and I have since attempted to re-create with no luck...possibly due to my lack of experience with Visio or perhaps it is due to the corrupted legend object to begin with).  On my newly created clean page that I copied the legend over to I found that if I went back to a previously created "finished" page, the legend that I had copied onto the clean page was now showing up in addtion to the correct legend.  Every finished design (each different page) had it's own correct legend as well as the copied legend from the clean page (which of course had objects from the broken design page).

In any event we (the user and myself) have agreed that on the particular page that she was having problems with, it would be best to delete the current legend, finish the necessary designs, save the work, and then apply the legend again.

Thanks for your help with this Scott!

Glad that I could help narrow down the problem even if we haven't solved it 100%. It sounds like the "intelligence" built into the legend shape is actually helpful some of the time but is causing a problem other times.

Just out of curiosity, which template are you using? Is it one of the standard Visio templates or a custom template?
