User cannot rename/name folders

I have a user who is working on mac osx (not sure what version. Did not want me to futz with her computer for very long.)

She can create a new folder but when she tries to name it, she can not type in the text field. Also, when she tries to rename old folders, she cannot type into them or delete the folder name. This doesn't seem to be an issue on any other machines in the office, and I can't figure out what's causing the problem.

IF you do a Get Info (Ctrl + click and pick Get Info  ... or Hold Apple key and press i) ... on the file or folder properties .. go to the Name and Extension and see can she  change the name.

Further down the Get Info panel you will see the "ownership" of the file.
She should have read/write permissions in order to edit the file name.

IS there a chance that this problem is occurring on a network share or inside a folder which is not part of her User directory .. in these cases she may not have read/write permissions on the file or folder.
Make sure her user account has administrative rights.
This may sound really silly, but I have actually had users run into it, and should at least be good for a laugh here:

I have had users that primarily only use the mouse and, with a bluetooth keyboard, the keyboard has died and stopped working so when they click on the folder to rename it, it won't rename because they can't type.

are these folders/directories on mounted filesystems (NFS, Apple*, whatever?)

She will not be able to change the name of a folder if it is a shared folder. Tell her to go pull down the Apple Menu to System Preference and go to the Sharing Preferences pane. Make sure the file sharing box in NOT ticked.
The other possibility is that she does not have administrative rights to the computer. Check the accounts preferences panel and make sure the user account she is using is an administrator account.
Where are the folders being created on the computer?
