Hello I am trying to open my remote desktop port in my router to connect to my home pc at work. My ip is 71.207.51.***

and can someone try to RD to that IP and see if it wants to accept connection? I think something is wrong or my work is having issues.

I have also attached my router screen..

Hi,

First check this

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx

Then check this site to forward ports

www.portforward.com

or if you want to byass all the firewall zeo config then try this free software.

Are you are running Windows XP home edition at home?

XP Home only has the remote desktop client. You won't be able to use RDC into it.
XP Professional has the Remote Desktop server portion available, thus listens on port 3389.

sorry running vista ultimate...and have RDC allowed..

Just trying to open 3389 in this dlink 655 router...

thanks
here is portforward info in my router...the above attachment is virtual server..

I think one of these is in the right spot.....

is there a way to test remote DC from the internet to see if it wants to accept?

Hi,
First get the wan ip address from that computer.

www.whatsmyip.org

Logon to another computer that is not on the network and open in internet explorer

Did you do the following under Vista Ultimate?
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/turn-on-remote-desktop-in-windows-vista/

Also, as the administrator on the Vista Ultimate PC, do the following in a command window:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

ded9 all my pcs are on the network...will have to try later at work...your page rocks though...love it.

your page tells me my ROUTER has to have a static IP set up on my machine? is that correct you think?

my belkin router I didnt have to do that and i got in......I just switched to this dlink 655 last week
Hi,

No Static ip address is not required. If the dynamic wan ip address is not changing.

But still if you want to connect to your computer i would recommend hamachi

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en..Becuase  you will get a vpn address that will never change.

Ded9
I might look into hamachi if this fails, but normally an open port 3389 and some settings turned off seems to be all i needed in the past....

This is just from my work to home pc from time to time....

ded9 is i wanted to work on my parents pc is this hamachi better then vnc? or easier to setup etc?

They wont know how to turn this off or on for me to do this...and they want to watch me work where RDC closes the pc screen
Hi,

Its the number 1 software and its free for personal use.

A much better and easier option for you is

www.teamviewer.com/

i personally use this software to help some of my dads friends who are very old and need help. This software is very simple. It will automatically bypass all firewall and router settings.

Ded9
I have a friend whom said the same thing about helping my parents use the teamviewer so that is what I will do for those problems that come up.

As for Hamachi can i use that to connect to my pc at home (does it run so i can log in etc) if I cant get this RDC to work?

Ded9 your advice has been excellent so far and normally setting up RDC isnt a issue as I have done it before and with different routers etc. It was activated on my pc and then I had a router change and now it wont work. I think per this Dlink DIR 655 i have the correct settings in there correct place, and short of turning off the router firewall I dont know what is stopping this connection.

I must fight to make this work before going to a different route just yet.
