Transient error may also mean an issue on their side, a possible DNS or reverse DNS issue.<br />

It may resolve itself shortly.<br />
<br />
also run a check on your DNS via dnsstuff.com<br />

On my Lotus Domino SMTP gateway server I keep getingthese messages for emails sent to the BTIntrnet domain and one other. <br />

Could this be a DNS problem with our ISP? The SMTP server point to the DNS of our ISP as primary and our internal as a secondary. <br />

Its running on Domino 5.013 (soon to be 7 I hope) <br />

SMTP Protocol Returned a Transient Error

Lotus Software produced the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program, and later developed Lotus Notes, a groupware and email system. Following its acquisition by IBM, the Notes and Domino client/server collaborative platform were expanded to include functions such as email, calendars, to-do lists, contacts management, teamrooms, discussion forums, file sharing, microblogging, instant messaging, blogs, and user directories. IBM also release SmartSuite, a comprehensive office suite, and followed that with Symphony, unrelated to the Lotus suite of the same name.

Interactions between email servers and clients are governed by email protocols. The three most common email protocols are POP, IMAP and MAPI. Most email software operates under one of these (and many products support more than one).  The correct protocol must be selected, and correctly configured, if you want your email account to work.
