does this work for what I need?

sp_trace_create is one of the procedures behind profiler. Given that it will pretty much catch everything happening on the server unless filtered to exactly what you want and need, you are going to drown in data.

I would suggest that there are a couple of other approaches.

Firstly have a modifiedDatetime column and a modifiedBy column, and log the changes that occur. That is, don't update or delete a row, merely insert the new version. Maybe a status flag to say what happened - update or delete etc.

Another method is to have a corresponding audit table, and have three triggers - insert/update/delete which log the relevant data in the audit table.

I wouldn't have though of using sp_trace_create for what you suggest.

But did you read the info in the link given?
