Troubleshoot unexpected restart

Hello everyone.  I have an HP Proliant ML150 on which I installed Gentoo a few months back.  I have been plagued by system restarts from time to time.  The restarts don't seem to follow any pattern and I have yet to find a cause.

The logs don't show the system being shut down properly prior to the restarts, so I wonder if it is hardware related.  The HP management tools don't show anything wrong(aside from one power supply not being plugged in).  I have been using Gentoo at home(both desktops and servers) for the past 3 years, but have never come across something like this.

I would like to make sure that this is not a software related problem before I start looking at hardware problems, since this is a brand new server.  However, I am unsure what else I need to look at, other than the logs in /var/log.

Any suggestions?

I'd check the hardware.

You could also boot it from a liveCD and let it run for some time under load to see what's happening ( infinite pack unpack of a file for an example )

Check your RAM : http://www.memtest.org/
Might be a faulty motherboard or a bad power supply.
Memory or the power supply you should check for.
Split the points between both PeturIngiEgilsson & ibu1, both have made valid suggestions which is the likely cause of the issue based on the original description provided.
