RegSrvc Module "problem" flag

Greetings:
Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop - Windows XP Home - IE & OE -  Every time I bootup I get this flag:
RegSrvc Module has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We're sorry for the inconvience.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.  Send Error Report - Don't Send.
Error Signature;
szAPPName: szAPPVer: 9.0.1.10   -  szModName: RegSrvc.exe
Error Report Contents:  The following files will be included in this error report:
c:\DOCUME~\AL\LOCALS\TEMP\WERa9fa.dir00\RegSrvc.exe/MDMP
c:\DOCLUME~\AL\LOCALS\TEMP\WERa9fa.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have researched this on the internet and find nothing that I understand.  I have searched for this folder/file (All Folders & Files Visible) and cannot find them.  No idea where to start now.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

While the error is showing, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where it tells you it has created "appcompat.txt".  You can copy it out to another folder.  The file tends to get deleted after you click OK to acknowledge that the program/module needs to close.

On the first error notification, click the link entitled:
"For more information about this error - click here".

When the 2nd dialog opens, you can scroll over and copy (Ctrl and C) the top lines giving you the details of the error and paste them here or into Notepad then here later.

Alternatively, use Alt and PrintScreen keys to copy that dialog, paste as a new image into MS Paint or other image editing program, save as a JPG, GIF, or BMP image file, then use the "Attach File" box below your comment here to upload your image.

Let us know these details first and we can ask for more if we need.

Interesting page here about this non-Windows file:

http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblog/2004/08/30/regsrvc

I think it is VERY important that you run a FULL Virus scan as soon as possible, and preferably from Safe Mode.  There are some indications that Viruses may install this file so it looks like a genuine file, or possibly infect a file already installed eg:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/regsrvc.exe-8927.html

The genuine Intel ProSet file should (http://www.hijackfree.com/en/processdetails/?id=826) be in the folder:
C:\Program Files\intel\wireless\bin\
whereas rogue versions may be in the folder:
C:\Windows\System32

Actually, I would look at uninstalling the Proset 9, and upgrade to teh latest version from the Intel site....

Oh, and if you open Task Manager, and kill dwwin.exe, it doesnt delete those 2 files..... The .txt file is usually fairly useless...... The .dmp might be of use, but not likely....

BillDL:

The only info I get on any window in this "flag" is included in the original question.  Nothing more.

While the "flag" was showing, I went into c:\ProgramFiles\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ and found the following files:  appcompat (Txt Document),  manifest (Text Document) and RegSrvc.exe.hdmp (a hdmp file)

I just went back to Cut & Paste these txt documents in this response and THEY ARE GONE!  Will reboot and BRB with that info.

Hi Karl

>>> "I sincerely hope this "word landfill" means more to you guys than it does to me!!" <<<

My apologies.  I should have made it more clear that the file would have been too long to post here, which was the reason I mentioned only copying 2 lines from the top of the error dialog:

>>> "When the 2nd dialog opens, you can scroll over and copy (Ctrl and C) the top lines giving you the details of the error and paste them here or into Notepad then here later".

I'll have a look for the important bits of the error from the text later.  Thanks.

BillDL:
The only information that is shown on the "flag" details is:

Error Signature;
szAPPName: szAPPVer: 9.0.1.10   -  szModName: RegSrvc.exe
Error Report Contents:  The following files will be included in this error report:
c:\DOCUME~\AL\LOCALS\TEMP\WERa9fa.dir00\RegSrvc.exe/MDMP
c:\DOCLUME~\AL\LOCALS\TEMP\WERa9fa.dir00\appcompat.txt

If you need more, then you might have to wade through the "word landfill."  Otherwise, that's it.

I downloaded the newer Intel Pro Wireless drivers and installed them.  Cutting to the chase, I am now using them and no more "flag."  Thank you.
If you ever suggest updating wireless drivers in the future, I suggest you tell the recipient to be sure he/she has the Encryption Key (if the network is secured) to the wirelless network. Fortunately, I'm a diligent records keeper!!

OH?  When I installed the new drivers it spent a LOT of time removing the old drivers.  Suspect that it removed the Encryption Key as well.  It didn't simply update the drivers.  My wireless network was there (including a few others) but it was "secured" and required the Key.  Once installed, they wireless network was accessable.  Again, thank you.
