Can't update USB drivers on Intel 82801EB

My on board USB ports are not working. I'm trying to update the drivers. I've gotten them from MSI and direct from Intel. Every version I try goes so far and then seems to hang. The MSI drivers were installing when I went to bed last night and the progress bar was in the same place this morning. I'm trying the Intel drivers right now and it's been over a half an hour. It looks like it's moving, but I don't think it should be taking this long.

Any advice?

Have you tried going into Device Manger and removing the USB child and parent objects before installing the updated drivers?

No that is too long!

Might be worth simply deleting the ports in Device Manager to begin with and allowing Windows to reload the drivers it thinks are correct when you reboot.

After I click ok to remove the first USB Root Hub, it just hangs there. The system doesn't lockup just the remove device.

As a last resort you could remove the usb registry keys and allow the system to rebuild them, I have never actually done this, but it may fix your problem. Note however that because I have not done this I am not sure what the outcome will be, use at your own risk.

Run regedit from your run window or a command prompt.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM\USB\

Remove all from this key, just don't remove the USB key

There is also a USBSTOR key under the ENUM key, the contents of this key should also be removed.

I'm not so sure about removing the reg keys since the outcome is unknown. I try and diabale them or remove them then dev manager hangs.

Here is an article I found about removing the keys I was referring to, obviously it has been done successfully before.

Just tried that. I have admin permissions. I changed the permissions with no problem. When I try to delete, it asks if I'm sure. Then I get the message "Cannot delete USB: Error while deleting key"

I tried this in safe mode and it didn't work at first. Then I went in and deleted the subkeys on at a time. Whe the main key was empty, then it let me delete it. I rebooted and it redetected everything and it worked!!!!!
