PAC files

I was wondering if any one can point me in the right direction for writing PAC files for proxy settings in IE6 and 7.

although i want to start of basic. i would like to end up with a file that can deal with proxies for over 16 sites, fail over and differetn appliactions (server) destinations..

however to start with i am looking for basic info on the fundementals of writting them
