Create a read only hard drive

Hello - I need to create a read only external hard drive - where my data can't be copied or altered or added to (except by myself) - is there a way to do this - I know you can do this with XP file permissions but this can easily be changed?
Is there a good freeware program?

Thanks :)

i believe xp had something called a briefcase which would only allow one to read or delete the data as well... never really played around with it that much though

That is the only secure way to do it.  Give the drive access with only your login and password, and no one else can change it.  The only foolproof way to do this is to cut the HDD contents to DVD media, that will assure it is read only.

You can look here, but all these can be circumvented with the right tools --
www.logicube.com/logicube/pressreleases/writeprotect.asp

You can also buy a USB drive with a write protect switch, that would work --
