VMware crashes entire system on Fedora 8 x64

I have VMware Workstation 6 installed on a Fedora 8 x64 system.  I've set up VMware for my kernel, 2.6.23.14-107.fc8.  In VMware, I installed Windows Pro x64 SP2, and the installation went fine.  Whenever I start VMware (not even necessarily power on a VM), I have about 5-10 minutes before the entire system invariably crashes.  Everything: VMware, Fedora, everything, and it forces me to do a hard reboot.

Nothing in particular seems to trigger the crash.  Like I said, VMware Workstation is just running, doing whatever, and bam!

I did some research online, and people seemed to have problems on their F8 x64 systems where "packaged" virtualistion software was clashing with VMware.  I checked, and I don't have any of that software installed.

I don't even know where to begin to better diagnose the problem.  If you know of any logs that might be useful, I can get that data for you.

My end goal is to run a Windows environment inside Linux.  Nothing special, not going over any servers, just me and my machine.

I'm new to VMware, as you may be able to tell.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Taj Robb

This might sound like a myth.. but
Do you have all the memory banks in your motherboard occupied?
Some systems can't handle all the stress and simply freeze up under too much memory stress ( like when  running vmware )

IF you have 4 memory modules in your system.. try removing two of them and see what happens.

I do have 4 backs occupied.  Here's what I tried:

Taking out 2, lowering memory used by VMWare Windows to 1GB (so no swapping would occur and exacerbate things).  Powered on Windows in VMWare, system booted, ran ok for like 10 minutes then froze.  I was not running any programs in Windows.

Leaving 4 in, increasing voltage to memory.  Same results as before.

A few times I thought it was stable!  But, to no avail.  Thanks though!

Have you tried to install a newer kernel?

2.6.23.14-107.fc8 is the latest stable release.  It only came out a few days ago.  Until then, I had -85, where the problem was happening as well.

Are you running vmware as root?

No, standard user.  I open it via panel, and it doesn't demand root privs.

run vmware from a console and log all errors to a file
once your computer has crashed, reboot and  open up the logfile and see if vmware produced any errors.

vmware 2>> ~/vmwareCrash.log

I'm having some issues trying to get vmware to log output to that log, using

vmware 2>> ~/vmwareCrash.log

...and then loading the vmx under my user profile.  However, I did find the standard log file, under "/home/robb/vmware/Windows XP x64/vmware.log" and put the output below.  Also, I ran a support package from vmware, vw-support, and it gave me some logs as well.  The logs differ, but the last line, the one I'm presuming is killing the system, is the same between them.

Here's the output of the log at "/home/robb/vmware/Windows XP x64/vmware.log"

Jan 30 18:56:11.137: vmx| The Microsoft Windows XP product activation feature creates a key based on the virtual hardware in the virtual machine where it is installed. Changes in the virtual machine configuration may require you to reactivate the guest operating system. To minimize those changes, be sure to set the final memory size for the virtual machine and install VMware Tools before you activate Windows XP.

I have reason to believe the problem is not with VMWare.  I'm going to open another question, and if that one resolves the issue, I'll close this question and give PeturIngiEgilsson all the points for your time and patience.  Just for kicks, here's the output of the syslog when the comp went down:

Jan 30 22:19:19 localhost kernel: ata5.01: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
Jan 30 22:19:19 localhost kernel: ata5.01: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:20/00:00:00:00:00/b0 tag 0 cdb 0x1e data 0
Jan 30 22:19:19 localhost kernel:          res 40/00:03:00:00:20/00:00:00:00:00/b0 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
Jan 30 22:19:19 localhost kernel: ata5: soft resetting port
Jan 30 22:19:20 localhost kernel: ata5.01: configured for PIO0
Jan 30 22:19:20 localhost kernel: ata5: EH complete
Jan 30 22:19:20 localhost kernel: sr 4:0:1:0: ioctl_internal_command return code = 8000002
Jan 30 22:19:20 localhost kernel:    : Sense Key : Aborted Command [current] [descriptor]
Jan 30 22:19:20 localhost kernel:    : Add. Sense: No additional sense information
Jan 30 22:21:38 localhost rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="1.19.11" x-pid="2301"][x-configInfo udpReception="No" udpPort="514" tcpReception="No" tcpPort="0"] restart

I think it has something to do with my CD/SCSI stuff.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your help!  It was my fault that I originally diagnosed the problem incorrectly, but you tips on checking logs helped find the real problem.  Thanks!
