Microsoft Office Project 2003 WBS > Renumber Greyed Out

I copied several tasks from one MS Project file into another one, then attempted to renumber the WBS.  However, the WBS renumber feature is greyed out in the Project drop-down.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It turns out that there are two answers to this question.  One can go into Tools > Options and check "show outline number" which causes the WBS number to show in the Task Name column where it is also automatically renumbered.

The other, more obscure answer, is that if you want a WBS column with "show outline number" unchecked, then Project > WBS > Define Code and create a default code definition.  Then Project > WBS > Renumber is no longer grayed out.

Completely stupid of course, but that's MS Project.
