How to Use the Power-Off Function

My new Maxtor SS-II has no problem as a storage server attached to my LAN.  However, I would like to shut it down occasionally.  The manual says to hit the power switch to shut it down.  But, nothing happens when I hit the switch.  It continues to run even when I keep the switch depressed for several seconds.  I had expected it to shut down gracefully.  Would simply disconnecting it risk damage?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This sounds like the power button may be faulty.  I would consider exchanging this while you can, assuming this is still relatively new.

Does anyone have this particular part?  Has that person successfully used the power button to power off?

Through experimentation, I found that one must hold the power button for about 10 seconds to power down successfully.  Now, the device works the way I wanted.
