Looks like a two fold issue here,
first WMP doesn not natively support the playing oF DVD /MPEG2
DVD roms normally come with its own default DVD player such Power DVD. This DVD player provides the directshow filters and ffdshow codecs for playing mpeg2.
Once you have these WMP will play DVD.
Alternative  free codecs is found by installing  Media -player Classic and VLC as mentioned.

2nd problem.
We  purchased few training DVD's from America<< is this DVD regeon 4 for Australia?

DVD region code
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
Power DVD ofers a regeon change but please be aware you have only allowable changes then the DVD rom is rendered uselss. You can buy regeon free DVD players with Power DVD.

Try the VLC Player.

Alternatively, since you've purchased the DVD's i guess you can extract the video files. You might find them deep inside the directories, do a search for quicktime or mpeg files.

You may not have the right codec in WMP to play the DVD: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6000.6336&id=C00D1167&contextid=61&originalid=C00D1167
AVICodec will identify it: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/avicodec.cfm

VLC will probably play it, as I haven't found anything it won't play.  You can find it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

You're welcome hiddencove,  may I ask which solved the problem, was the regeon correct and just missing codecs?
