PCI-e 1x , Whats the maximum speed on a Gigabit LAN ?

Could someone let me know whats the max or best speed a PCI-e 1X card can handle on a Gigabit LAN ?  On one of our failed server it had a PCI-X so I know it can do true gigabit, but the replacement server only has PCI-e 1X and PCI slots, I could use one of the regular Intel PRO/100 Server as its hardware based, but am wondering how much a PCI-e can handle ?
