My Vista Desktop has gone completely BLANK

I need to get my Vista desktop back.  When I boot up Vista (Toshiba A200 laptop) with my local account (it works ok if i use my SBS2003 server account), I get a completely blank desktop with only the gadgets showing. If I try to copy any icons to the desktop eg from the start menu, NOTHING happens.
When I look under users\peter\desktop all the icons for my missing desktop are there!!!
If I click on the "Show Desktop" icon on the toolbar even  the gadgets disappear and still NO desktop.
All programs etc seem to work completely.
My mother always taught me to have a clean desktop but this is ridiculous!!!
How do I get my desktop back?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Did you log onto this account from another location? sounds like the default monitor has switched places with a dual screen? secondary screen, I have seen this if a media player has a movie in the play list the secondary screen will be black.

Try a system restore?

No i logged in on the laptop - it showed the desktop background but no icons at all (except gadgets).

BUT I tried a System Restore as you sugeted and I noticed that there was a Windows Update and System restore at 10.42am today which is about the time it went funny.

The System Restore worked and my desktop icons are back!!!

It must have been the Windows Update!!!

the system restore worked but it looks as if the problem was caused by a Windows update this morning.
gosh wonder what the windows update was, may I suggest you r/click my computer properties Automatic updates> and change the updates to>Notify me  but don't automatically download or install .
Windows updates these days often offer more things than we want to change.
