Move SMTP email address from one user to another

Greetings, I have an info smtp email address setup for one of my users "". I have to transfer the address to a new user. I have already removed the smtp entry from user1 and added it to user2 but email sent to "" is still going to user1. What do I have to do to make the change take effect?

You are better using distribution lists for this, so you can just delete or add members for the email address. See this link

I can creat a distribution list for this, but the problem I have is email is still being sent to user1, which no longer has the smtp email address as part of their account. How do I stop that from happening?
