Can users connect to an E2k7 database in a remote site with E2k local server?

We need to move all users from an E2k database in order to remove it. This needs to done asap.
As this is a 'staging' database, some users belong to another site, but due to E2k routing group setup, they can connect to our E2k server.
E2k7 has not yet been installed in the remote site (still with E2k).
If the users are moved to a database on our new E2k7 local server, will the users be able to connect and route mail to and from the remote site.
(I' assuming thisi is not possible, as we dont have a connector set up for E2k-E2k7 between the sites.
Can you confirm for us?

Thanks.

you dont need a connector, so long as bothe servers are in the same organisation, in which case the routing group would still apply, routing between 2 e2k7 servers uses the AD site connectors but when there is a previous version i uses the routing groups.

if they are not in tha same organisation that is  whole different ball park. so lets cross that if we come to it.
