Thats way old (way! :-P).

edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
change "onboot=yes" to "onboot=no" to not automatically bring up the interface when the system boots.
Can You tell us what linux distribution You have?
The first post refers to debian-like, the second to redhat like config.

Depends if You just want to set static IP, or You have two eth's and dhcp is configured on the unused one, etc.
The question states that they're running redhat... so I'd assume they're running redhat :-P.

My guess would be that either they're booting w/o a network (on the road) or they're using wireless.
