is there no real native support for autoresponders on exchange 2003?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can use the Out-Of-Office function in Outlook or you can make a rule that reply to incoming mail.

If I use out of office function,
The autoresponse subject line reads "out of office response re", This is no good to me.

I canot use outlook rules as this mailbox will not actually be collected by a n outlook user

thanks

Log the user into outlook for configuration (I realise you won't use outlook long term)
Then use the Outlook Rules & Alerts wizard to set a "Server Side" rule.
-  "Have server reply using a specific message"

ie:  This sets the server to respond to the message without the MAPI client being active
