Need help deleting a user in Active Directory

Specific - when trying to create a user (John Smith, as an example), I get an error that this user already exists.  Knowing this is not the case, I search and find something like this in the AD forest -

Smith, JohnCNF:75b5fed3-249a-425e-a98b-7f1c60af1ee7

When trying to delete this object, I get this error -

"Windows cannot delete this object, because directory object not found."

I forced replication between sites.
I am logged on as user that has complete control of everything in the forest.

How would I go about cleaning this user up?

Thanks for the offer.  I'm sure this is probably how to find it, but I can't locate it when I connect to the domain using LDP which it's supposed to be in, I can't find it.

No replication issues I can see.  Thanks for attempting to help.
