Are there any alternative programs to PowerGREP?

PowerGREP so far is the only program I've found so far that claims it can search through numerous text-files, etc for information. However, this is a highly advanced commercial program running at $149.

Are there any known free/Open-source alternatives to this application? I'm just trying to search for "text" through a directory of various documents, and I'd hate to have to buy PowerGREP to only use a small chunk of my money's worth.

Best regards!

just GREP itself.  GREP was originally a unix utility that could search tons of files for just a text string, it was incredibly powerful.  Now it has been adapted to the PC -- just go through this list till you get one that you want, some are still command line, like the original GREP, others are windows based, easier to use, there is such a variety, you have to pick for yourself, but they all act and do the same as the original GREP unix. http://www.google.com/search?num=30&q=GREP+download+windows

You may want to take a look at cygwin
http://www.cygwin.com/
It brings the power of UNIX including grep and hundreds of other useful UNIX utilities to Windows.
