How to Browse the Web on One Laptop Per Child

My client just bought 2 of these child's computers. We are unable to browse the web. When we get on the Mesh network and put something into the Google homepage, for instance, we get an Error 404 (or Page Cannot Be Displayed).

Does anyone know how we can browse the web using the One Laptop Per Child computer?

Thanks.

I believe that's running Ubuntu.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but here's the getting connected page for the project...

http://laptop.org/en/laptop/start/connecting.shtml

Do you know if you have a valid connection?  Can you get to any page other than google?

How about www.ubuntu.com?  Can any of the computers in the mesh get online?

I don't have the computer with me right now... I will pick it up from my client's tomorrow to play with it this weekend...

I can't get to any other page besides Google. I will read ubuntu... Thank you for now. I will get back to you again when I have the computer in my hands.

Well, I do have a question now... do you have any idea what page I should read on the Ubuntu site?

BTW, that OLPC connection page might be helpful... I'm printing it out.

This homepage you have, is this a local file or are you actually connected at all to the internet? I mean, if you can get to one site, you can usually get anything else you want on the web...

What is the "Mesh" network, btw?

I just want to know if you can get to any site like rid was asking.  If you can get to www.ubuntu.com then you have web access and there is just something wrong with the page that you were trying to access previously.

A 404 message could mean that there is something wrong on your end or on the remote end.

My folks just got one of these for our 6 year old. Having givin it to him yet as it's a bit more comlicated that originally percieved. jared_luker has the correct URL above for connections but what we learned is that not all schools in the USA have the Mesh network. You need to make sure you are really connected to the School Server Mesh (which may have a firewall) which you might see but you may need to get school IT admin to give you access rights (key).

The only other way that works is a wifi hotspot (and it can not have WAP). WEP is okay but you will need the key.  Most imporant point on URL mentioned is:

If the access point requires a key, you will be prompted. Note that different types of access points require different types of keys: be sure to select the correct type from the pull-down menu that is presented. Some access points (such as the Apple Extreme®) will only work with a hexadecimal value. If you have a password or passphrase, go to Hex Converter to get the hex key. Also, with the Apple Extreme you need to set shared key. Most other access points prefer the open key setting when using WEP.

Currently, we do not support WPA-enabled WiFi access points; we anticipate including WPA support in early 2008.

Sorry, I hit enter before I was done. here is the FAQ link you should review:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Support_FAQ#I_am_on_Google.2C_but_the_browser_then_tells_me_.22search_failed.22.21

I am on Google, but the browser then tells me "search failed"!
When the Browse activity is launched, it displays a page with a Google logo and a search box. This page is stored locally in the XO, and it does not indicate that the XO is connected to the Internet. Please check How can I access the Internet for how to connect to the Internet.

OK, thank you for all your responses, but I still think I need a solution...

I cannot get to any website at all...

The laptop says I'm connected to the Mesh network, but I still can't get anything... any other ideas.

Thank you very much for all the responses so far!

Kara,

If you are 100% sure you are connected to the Mesh network at your school, and you can not get to any web sites, you need to speak with the IT administrator due to a firewall or security issue. That would be the only thing I could think of that would prevent you from getting to any other sites. If the laptop is really connected to Mesh you should be able to get to another web site.

Do an experiment and take the laptop to a coffee shop (wireless cafe) or local library with wireless and see if you can get online without the Mesh using a wireless connection.

OK, thx2. Thank you for your advice. Maybe my client will give me a break today since this issue seems so difficult to solve. I don't feel so bad now for not knowing the answer!

Thanks again.

Hi there,

I am finally beginning to feel better. Thanks to all of you for your patience.

I turned on the laptop, and it says I am connected to the Mesh Network. I get the Google home page, but I get an error 404 when I try to go to www.ubuntu.com. Do any of you have any ideas?

Thanks again.

Try a number of different sites, perhaps there's a block on some (types of) sites in the network gateway (firewall).
