Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Skype does not store your contacts on their server. It is stored on your local hard drive. You can use shareware tools to do the backup/restore such as "Skype Backup Tool" or you can do it manually yourself.

The data is stored in the following directory:

\Documents and Settings\[YourUserName]\Application Data\Skype\[YourSkypeLoginName]

If you take a copy of that directory and move it to another computer that has Skype already installed on it, it will update it with your contacts, etc.

the skype contacts are related to your profile, and yes, those are stored on the Skype servers.  I use the same profile to login from different computers, and when I change a contact on one system, it shows up on the other when I login.  If you use exactly the same login and PW, you should see all contacts from the other computer.  You have to close and restart skype, or logout, login, but it works fine for me.

How do I back up my contact list and Skype settings?
Starting with Skype for Windows Version 1.2, contacts are stored in two locations, both locally on your computer and centrally on our servers.

If you use Version 1.2 or higher your contacts are stored on our server and anytime you log in using a different computer you will see the same contacts.

Skype stores your contact list locally on your computer in C:\Documents and Settings\yourwindowsusername\Application Data\Skype directory.

under that, there should be a directory with your login name.  If not, do this -- go to the system that works correctly, and with a floppy or two (or if a network use it) copy that directory under skype to the floppy or to the same location in the other computer on the network in the same location.  When you do this cloning of the profile, MAKE SURE THAT skype is NOT runnning on either system.

Skype has a "send contacts to" feature, but that assumes that the person getting the contacts uses a different login than yours.  Basically you have to CLONE the folder under Skype to the other system, then restart skype, and login as your correct login, and you should have all the contacts.
