Mobile PDF with signature capture and reply by fax capability

I have a client who wants to retrieve faxed forms to their mobile devices whereby the mobile user can sign-off or approve the form, with a signature, then send the signed document out to a fax. Im in the wireless business and know that our mobile digital networks do not support the fax protocol so Im thinking that a server based solution may be the answer. Whereby the incoming fax form is rendered to a mobile device (windows, palm, java ) for viewing and editing with the ability to append a signature. Once the edit is complete the form is rendered back to the server in order to send by fax. Any ideas out there?

You might be better off, then, with a third-party application combo like one of these:

Break free from the fax machine and start sending and receiving faxes with your PDA, Smartphone, or Blackberry®. eFax gives you a fax number that delivers faxes as email attachments. Read them anywhere!

InterFAX, the global internet fax service is available to clients who require a flexible fax solution. The PDA Fax service is available for inbound fax reception and for outbound fax transmission to worldwide fax destinations from any email program or custom application.

With Digipass for Palm, the Palm or smart phone becomes a hardware token providing one-time passwords, challenge - response remote authentication and digital signatures.

If you can tell us specifically which make and model of device we're discussing, and whether the device is running the Palm or Pocket PC OS, that would help. Otherwise, the best I can do is refer you to this Palm article:

Can I send or receive faxes with Treo?,Kb=PalmSupportKB,CASE=35663

I believe Palm does offer some Digital Signature support, but the extent of the support may depend on a number of factors.

If you want to use Java for any part of this and synchronize, as of January 12, 2008, Palm took down the free download for the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine (JVM). If you can find it, that works.

Otherwise, Palm still offers this one:

WebSphere Micro Environment

This version of WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment will only execute on Treo 600 and 650 smartphones, Tungsten handhelds and Zire handhelds from Palm.

IBM offers this one:

WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment

Operating systems supported: Linux, Neutrino RTOS, Other Unix, Palm OS Cobalt, Palm OS Garnet, Windows

Actually I'm open to any wireless (CDMA) device or platform. As for signature capture that would take a touchscreen device; however, if a digital signature image can be saved on the device and appended to a form or document to serve as a signature, which should eliminate the touchscreen requirement. WebSphere sounds good for developing an application but I'm looking for something already shrink-wrapped or at least close. For instance Onset's Metamessage comes close by offering the ability to fax attachments; however, I need the ability to receive faxed documents, the ability to append a signature to the document and ultimately send the signed document to a fax.
